ContinentialContinental has unveiled two new summer tyre models: the EcoContact 7 and EcoContact 7 S. These latest innovations focus on maximising driving efficiency, minimising rolling noise, and enhancing handling dynamics. Designed with electric vehicles in mind, these tyres also improve fuel efficiency in traditional internal combustion cars. According to EU tyre label ratings, both models achieve predominantly Class A ratings for rolling resistance and Class A or B for wet braking and noise reduction.
The EcoContact 7 and EcoContact 7 S significantly enhance overall efficiency, thanks to Continental’s advanced technology. A key factor is introducing the Green Chili 3.0 rubber compound alongside Smart Energy Casing technology, first introduced in the AllSeasonContact 2. The new material composition used in the tyre carcass, inner layer, and sidewalls helps to reduce internal friction, resulting in lower rolling resistance and improved energy efficiency.
Continental took inspiration from golf ball technology when developing these tyres. Golf balls feature 300–450 small dimples that reduce air resistance, enhance lift, and ensure a more controlled flight. Applying this principle, Continental developed the Aerodimple structure, integrating small dimples into the tyres' sidewalls. This innovation minimises air turbulence around the tyre, reducing the energy required for movement.
To support quieter urban environments, Continental has introduced the Silent Pattern tread design in the EcoContact 7 and EcoContact 7 S. This design helps to reduce road noise, making it particularly beneficial for electric vehicles, which lack traditional engine noise, and for petrol or diesel cars with quieter engines.
By optimising the spacing and angle of the tread blocks, Continental has tailored the design to counteract frequencies typically produced at around 50 km/h. This innovation enhances driving comfort while reducing noise pollution for pedestrians and residents.
